Hartford Brown is an experienced transactional and litigation attorney. He previously served for five years as the managing shareholder of Klinedinst’s Los Angeles office. During his tenure, he also was an active member of the firm’s Executive Committee, helping guide the firm’s growth strategy in Southern California.
Mr. Brown’s law practice focuses on providing legal counsel to his clients, for whom he often acts as outside general counsel, in varied transactional matters, as well as ensuring their litigation needs are handled. His clients also come from technology and e-commerce, real estate development and funds, banks and venture capital, film production and post-production and video game development and sales, as well as in a variety of other business segments, including manufacturers of consumer products. Mr. Brown also provides advice and counsel to entrepreneurs and other high net worth individuals in a variety of matters.
With respect to transactional matters, his clients seek Mr. Brown’s counsel on a wide variety of matters, including mergers and acquisitions of privately held companies, real estate, and intellectual property transactions. He also assists his clients with corporate and employment matters, as well as negotiating and drafting a variety of other agreements critical to his clients’ business.
Mr. Brown regularly represents his clients with real estate acquisitions and development. He has assisted clients in negotiating the purchase and sale of hotels, office building developments and other commercial property ranging from pharmacies to restaurants to gas stations, as well as undeveloped properties throughout California. As part of this work, Mr. Brown is the chair of the firm’s Hotels & Resorts Practice Group, which is comprised of attorneys focused on representing hoteliers and others in the hospitality field with transactional matters unique to their industry.
In addition to transactional matters, Mr. Brown’s clients look to him to handle litigation critical to their overall growth and success. Litigation matters Mr. Brown handles include corporate litigation, commercial litigation, intellectual property disputes, and real estate litigation. He also has significant experience defending product liability claims made against manufacturers and distributors of cosmetics, medical devices and equipment, and construction equipment, as well as a variety of consumer products, ranging from plumbing equipment to household appliances to food items. Mr. Brown has defended his clients throughout the United States in nationwide class actions, multi-district litigation, state coordinated proceedings and other complex litigation throughout the United States.
Mr. Brown attended the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Keble College, Oxford University. He received his B.A. in European History in 1994 from the University of San Francisco, before earning his J.D. at Tulane University School of Law in 1997.
Before joining Klinedinst in 2002, Mr. Brown worked for a large international firm. He has been licensed to practice law in California since 1997 and is admitted before all state and federal courts in California, as well as the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
