Senior Counsel

Michael J. Carey is Senior Counsel in the firm’s Irvine law office and a valued member of the firm’s Product Liability, General Liability, and Toxic Tort/ Environmental practice groups. Mr. Carey represents national corporations in complex litigation matters, primarily focusing on personal injury defense and premises defense. He handles a vast majority of cases at the core of defending property owners and businesses in premises liability defense. He has dealt with environmental disputes involving asbestos and benzene exposure cases. Mr. Carey has worked with various clients, including automotive manufacturers, commercial construction companies, utility companies, premises owners, and public entities. In addition, Mr. Carey serves as lead litigation counsel, bringing years of experience defending clients’ Person(s) Most Qualified (PMQ) and cross-examining expert witnesses.

Before joining Klinedinst, Mr. Carey spent over a decade representing his clients in various civil matters, including personal injury, product liability, public tort liability, professional malpractice, intellectual property matters, business disputes, and labor and employment disputes. His extensive product liability experience, previously focused on toxic tort, has given him a unique ability to handle complex claims involving numerous legal theories, as well as complex medical and scientific issues. Through many years of representing both plaintiff and defense clients, he has established a world-class perspective on developing and anticipating strategies from both sides of civil action. He joins forces with general counsel and claim representatives to defend property owners and businesses to best serve his client’s interests.

Mr. Carey possesses a broad range of litigation skills to best serve his clients. He manages all aspects of mediation, arbitration, motion practice, discovery, site inspections, settlement negotiations, and court appearances. Mr. Carey also served as second chair for two medical malpractice jury trials.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mr. Carey currently resides in Huntington Beach with his wife. When he is not assisting clients with their legal needs, he is honing in on his culinary skills.
