Klinedinst lawyers are indispensable strategic partners to business leaders, helping to achieve business objectives and create proactive solutions to resolve the many legal challenges that businesses are confronted with every day.  Whether vigorously advocating for business clients in court, or guiding business transactions and negotiations, Klinedinst is the trusted legal advisor to have by your side.

Appellate attorney Robert M. Shaughnessy has announced his official candidacy for a seat on the San Diego County Bar Association’s Board of Directors. Mr. Shaughnessy’s goals include advancing civility within the legal profession, promoting diversity within the law, and lowering the barriers to justice for poor and under-served communities.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Klinedinst Shareholder Robert M. Shaughnessy has officially announced his candidacy for a position on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Board of Directors.

Mr. Shaughnessy is running for one of four “at-large” positions up for election, and would serve a three-year term through 2023.

A Certified Specialist in Appellate Law, Mr. Shaughnessy brings nearly twenty years of leadership and involvement in the San Diego legal community. He recently served as Chair of the SDCBA Appellate Practice Section, where he also held positions as Program Chair and Civil Rules Comment Chair. Mr. Shaughnessy is also an appellate attorney volunteer for pro per appellants, and provides procedural guidance for SDCBA’s Pro Bono Appellate Practice Workshop.

Mr. Shaughnessy’s work both inside and outside the courtroom have not gone without notice. He has earned the respect of his peers, achieving Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV®-Preeminent™ peer review rating. He was also honored in 2019 in San Diego Super Lawyers® magazine, a recognition that fewer than 5% of attorneys in California ever achieve.

In a statement posted to the SDCBA website, Mr. Shaughnessy aims to use his service on the Board to advance civility within the legal profession. “In a divided social and political climate, I believe the legal profession is uniquely positioned to model authentic civility,” said Mr. Shaughnessy. “As lawyers we are called to represent clients and their issues. That obligation mandates vigorous advocacy. But this call in no way conflicts with our ability to be mindful, civil, and respectful to each other and the courts. ”

Mr. Shaughnessy also aims to lower the barriers to justice for poor and under-served communities. “The SDCBA leads the way with excellent programs like the Civil Appellate Self-Help Workshop, and the Access to Appellate Justice Pro Bono Program. But more is needed,” he added. Mr. Shaughnessy would look for ways to work with local organizations and courts to help provide affordable legal services to groups that would otherwise be denied full access to our justice system.

A leader in local, county, and state organizations, Mr. Shaughnessy has developed a wealth of experience in serving diverse membership bases and honing traits needed for effective leadership. He is a founding member of the San Diego Appellate Inn of Court, and serves as Co-Chair of the Civility Committee for the San Diego Chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (ABTL). Outside of the legal community, Mr. Shaughnessy serves as Board Member to No Limits Limb Loss Foundation, and is a member of several non-profit organizations.

Voting for the 2020 Board of Directors Election officially opens October 15, 2019. Online voting will conclude on November 8, 2019, and all SDCBA attorney members are eligible to vote.

“This is a tremendous positive for our clients and employees alike,” said Kevin J. Gramling, Managing Shareholder of Klinedinst’s Orange County office. “Two months ago, we celebrated our 19th anniversary in Santa Ana, so leaving the area after nearly two decades is bittersweet. However, our new modern space is centrally-located, with enhanced efficiency and ease of access to the business clients we work with on a daily basis.”

Located just off the 405 freeway, the new space is located in Jamboree Center, a development of five Class A buildings offered by the Irvine Company. Jamboree Center has earned LEED® Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The complex has also earned the ENERGY STAR® rating by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Clients and guests visiting from out of town are now able to stay at the Hotel Irvine, located steps away from the new office. In addition, Jamboree Center is one of the first to incorporate Tesla energy storage systems, which help reduce peak energy demand by up to 25% and decrease overall energy costs by as much as 10%.

“Kevin started the OC office in 2000 with a single desk in a tiny office by the courthouse,” added John Klinedinst, Founder and CEO of Klinedinst PC, “but he had the vision and the foresight to see the amazing business opportunities in the region. Since opening, Orange County has exploded in growth, and by extension, we have outgrown our own space. To have to move to larger space is a wonderful problem to have, and a sign of our continued belief in the strength in the Orange County business community.”

Goode II were selected for their experience in employment litigation, sexual harassment, discrimination, and other employment topics. Their chapter titled “Voir Dire and Opening Statement: Defense Perspective” is a detailed guide to strategic considerations for voir dire and opening statements in harassment and retaliation cases.  In the chapter, the authors discuss a defense-oriented approach to juror selection, along with integrating defense-oriented themes into opening statements to avoid prejudice and bias against employers.

In the chapter, the authors discuss a defense-oriented process by which prospective jurors are examined, selected, and presented with opening statements that are imperative to sexual harassment cases. LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA – Klinedinst Founder and CEO John D. Klinedinst has just been named a 2019 Most Admired CEO by the San Diego Business Journal. The award, recognizing John’s stewardship in the medium-sized private company category, was announced June 19, 2019 at a special ceremony held on the La Jolla campus National University.

The Most Admired CEO Award distinguishes chief executives who have a strong vision for their companies, have shown commitment to culture in the workplace, and have made significant contributions to the San Diego community.

“John is absolutely deserving of this recognition,” said Arthur Moreau, III, who serves as Chief Operating Officer for Klinedinst PC. “John is a visionary leader who believes in the power of the individual. He truly leads by example, and puts his business background to work every day for the benefit of our employees, our partners, and our clients.”

Each year, the San Diego Business Journal receives submissions of Chief Executive Officers who lead businesses, grow revenue, create jobs and provide products and services that boost the region’s economy. The San Diego Business Journal then evaluates all submissions and publishes its list of finalists for the award.

Of the dozens of finalists named this year from the business community, only six law firms had CEOs or managing partners that made it through to the finalist round. In recognition for their contributions and accomplishments, every one of the finalists was recognized at the awards ceremony before the winners in each category were announced.

“This is such an incredible and completely unexpected honor,” said Klinedinst. “I have been fortunate enough to be in the right place, at the right time. I’m very honored, humbled and proud to be a part of this amazing group of team members and the great work they do, day-in and day-out. My thanks to the San Diego Business Journal for highlighting our amazing business community, and to all of the CEOs making this a terrific place for business to happen.”
