SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA – Klinedinst attorney Frederick Heiser has just published a new article on premises liability. Titled “Three Ways Retailers Can Address Premises Liability Claims,” the article provides practical guidance that retailers can use to mitigate the risk of lawsuits being filed.

Mr. Heiser is Counsel in Klinedinst’s Los Angeles and Orange County offices, and is a Member of the firm’s Business and Commercial Litigation, Commercial General Liability, and Employment Practice Groups. His clients include retailers, local entrepreneurs, small family businesses, and Fortune 500 companies.

In the article, Mr. Heiser writes, “Creating a culture of safety is already a given for retailers.  For the most part, retailers are on the lookout for unsafe conditions and work to fix them right away.  Yet premises liability claims remain an issue.  Although some of these claims are legitimate, many feature ambitious plaintiffs who exaggerate—or worse yet, fabricate—claims against a retailer for ambiguous conditions on its property. The more common these cases become, the more retailers feel the rub:  They are easy targets.”

Mr. Heiser goes on to review specific steps that management and employees alike can take to help ensure they do not become the next targets of premises liability litigation.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Klinedinst PC is pleased to announce the promotion of Susan S. Nahama to Managing Shareholder of Klinedinst’s San Diego office.

Ms. Nahama focuses her practice on professional liability, including the defense of lawyers and accountants in pre-litigation and litigation matters. She also has two decades of experience in general liability, commercial and residential construction, insurance, business disputes, mold-related claims, product liability, and employment matters.

“Regardless of the type of matter, I absolutely believe in the importance of collaborating with clients to find practical solutions to their legal issues,” said Nahama. “Transparency, relationship management, and consensus-building have always been hallmarks of my legal practice, and I look forward to bringing those same values to the management of our fantastic San Diego team.”

Nahama first joined the firm in 1997 when it had only a single office and roughly a dozen attorneys. She was one of the few women lawyers at the firm, drawn to Klinedinst’s focus on helping business clients while emphasizing the value of balance in work and personal growth.

Fast forward to today, and the firm has grown nearly six times in size. “And even after all of this growth,” Nahama adds, “the firm still maintains its commitment to those core ideals, that individual growth, both personally and professionally, allows us to better serve our business clients.”

A San Diego Native, Ms. Nahama received her undergraduate degree cum laude from the University of California at San Diego in 1992, and her Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1995. She joined the firm in 1997, and was elevated to Shareholder only three years later in 2000.

Behind the scenes, Nahama has also played important roles in initiatives that have benefitted all of the firm’s locations, from hiring and improved accounting procedures, to the rollout of the firm’s eDiscovery department.

The Animal Law Committee (ALC) assembles leading Animal Law attorneys across the nation, with the shared goal of protecting and improving the lives of animals through legal strategy. ALC addresses all issues concerning animals and the law, and provides opportunities for its members to share experiences and viewpoints on issues that impact animals and our relationship with them.

Each year, an individual is selected as Vice-Chair who has proven leadership in the practice area of animal law, and who has been consistently involved in the committee’s events and in TIPS.

Ms. Lutz has been a committee member since its inception in 2004. She previously served as Chair of ALC in 2015, and Vice-Chair in 2017.

Having defended over 200 veterinarians in actions before the California Veterinary Medical Board, Ms. Lutz is experienced in humane society regulation laws and the California Veterinary Medicine Practice Act.

Within the community, Ms. Lutz is active with numerous veterinary organizations, including the California Veterinary Medical Association and the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators. Her tireless volunteer work, particularly with animal rescue organizations, has also distinguished her as a leader in the animal law field.
