Child holding holiday present.
For the ninth year in a row, Klinedinst will be a National Corporate Donor for Toys for Tots, helping delivery holiday cheer to nearly 7 million children across the country.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – For the ninth straight year, Klinedinst PC will become a National Corporate Donor for Toys for Tots.

Toys for Tots
Klinedinst has become a National Corporate Donor for 2018 Toys for Tots program.

Toys for Tots was started by Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks in 1947. Hendricks and his wife were searching for a means to help children in need for the holidays. Upon discovering that no organization was setup to do that, Hendricks decided to start his own. That first year, Hendricks and the Marines in his reserve unit in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys.

The program was so successful that the Commandant directed all Marine Reserve units to begin their own Toys for Tots campaigns. Walt Disney joined the effort, designing a poster featuring the logo that is still in use today, and Toys for Tots had been transformed into a national community action program.

Fast forward to today, and Toys for Tots has become synonymous with the holidays, delivering new presents to America’s less fortunate children. Toys for Tots is active in over 800 communities, helping to bring holiday cheer to disadvantaged children across all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Last year, Toys for Tots distributed over 18 million toys to 7 million children.

“We are very pleased to welcome Klinedinst back as a corporate partner of the Toys for Tots Program,” said retired Marine Colonel Ted Silvester, vice president of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “With their generous support during the holidays, we will be able to fulfill the dreams of less fortunate children, who otherwise might have been forgotten.”

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has earned the highest rating (four stars out of four) by Charity Navigator. 96.7% of all donations go directly toward Toys for Tots’ goal of providing gifts, books, and toys to the estimated 15 million children living in poverty.

“As a firm, we absolutely believe in the mission and the spirit of Toys for Tots,” said Arthur S. Moreau, a former naval aviator who serves as Chief Operating Officer of Klinedinst. “While Toys for Tots has its roots here in Southern California, it does an incredible job of delivering holiday cheer across the entire country. We appreciate the positive impact the organization has on those less fortunate, and are truly honored to be supporting Toys for Tots on behalf of our clients, our employees, and our shareholders.”

SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA – Klinedinst attorney Frederick Heiser has just published a new article on premises liability. Titled “Three Ways Retailers Can Address Premises Liability Claims,” the article provides practical guidance that retailers can use to mitigate the risk of lawsuits being filed.

Frederick M. Heiser, Esq.
Fred M. Heiser

Mr. Heiser is Counsel in Klinedinst’s Los Angeles and Orange County offices, and is a Member of the firm’s Business and Commercial Litigation, Commercial General Liability, and Employment Practice Groups. His clients include retailers, local entrepreneurs, small family businesses, and Fortune 500 companies.

In the article, Mr. Heiser writes, “Creating a culture of safety is already a given for retailers.  For the most part, retailers are on the lookout for unsafe conditions and work to fix them right away.  Yet premises liability claims remain an issue.  Although some of these claims are legitimate, many feature ambitious plaintiffs who exaggerate—or worse yet, fabricate—claims against a retailer for ambiguous conditions on its property. The more common these cases become, the more retailers feel the rub:  They are easy targets.”

Mr. Heiser goes on to review specific steps that management and employees alike can take to help ensure they do not become the next targets of premises liability litigation.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Klinedinst was proud to co-host the California Lawyer Association’s San Diego Summer Reception, held on August 16, 2018 at Hotel Republic.

The California Lawyer Association (CLA) reception was the first of its kind in the state, bringing together hundreds of leaders from San Diego’s legal community to meet face-to-face with CLA executives and learn more about the organization’s direction in the years ahead.

CLA is the new home of the Sections of the State Bar of California, as well as the California Young Lawyers Association. The organization was formed when Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 36 into law, separating most of the professional association activities of the State Bar of California into a separate non-profit entity.

CLA launched on January 1, 2018, with a mission to promote the professional advancement of all attorneys practicing in California. With the long-standing State Bar Section members automatically becoming part of the organization, CLA instantly became the nation’s second-largest voluntary bar association in the country.

Nearly 300 registrants came together on the rooftop deck of Hotel Republic to take in the warm summer weather.  Leaders from San Diego area bar organizations, as well as local attorneys joined CLA executives to hear about upcoming events, to register for a section, and to find out how their practice could be helped by getting involved in CLA.

Klinedinst is proud to support CLA, and continue its goal of advancing the practice of law in California. For more information and background, please visit:

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Klinedinst PC is pleased to announce the promotion of Susan S. Nahama to Managing Shareholder of Klinedinst’s San Diego office.

Ms. Nahama focuses her practice on professional liability, including the defense of lawyers and accountants in pre-litigation and litigation matters. She also has two decades of experience in general liability, commercial and residential construction, insurance, business disputes, mold-related claims, product liability, and employment matters.

A San Diego Native, Ms. Nahama received her undergraduate degree cum laude from the University of California at San Diego in 1992, and her Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1995. She joined the firm in 1997, and was elevated to Shareholder only three years later in 2000.

Behind the scenes, Nahama has also played important roles in initiatives that have benefitted all of the firm’s locations, from hiring and improved accounting procedures, to the rollout of the firm’s eDiscovery department.

“Susan has been a cornerstone of our San Diego office for over two decades, and has seen firsthand the incredible growth going on in our region,” added John D. Klinedinst, CEO and Founder of Klinedinst PC. “She is appreciated and respected by both clients and team members alike. We look forward to her fresh ideas, her enthusiasm, and her leadership as we continue to expand our services to clients in San Diego.”

Nahama officially takes on the position effective September 1, 2018.
